Dr. Miller focuses on Executive Function (EF) which, in a most basic sense, are the cognitive processes we use to regulate ourselves. To better understand we can break EF down into two categories—thinking and doing. Thinking skills involve planning, organizing, time management, working memory and metacognition. Doing skills involve response inhibition, emotional control, sustained attention, task initiation, flexibility and goal-directed persistence. Together, we refer to these as Executive Skills.
The inability to manage these skills is more common than one might think. In fact, there’s a scientific name for it—executive function disorder (EFD). CogniBuilders offers the following services to help alleviate EFD:
We offer an Initial Consultation to assess if the client’s situation warrants a formal Consultation & Evaluation. This Consultation also allows you to learn more about what we do and ask questions. The Initial Consultation is a 15 minute phone consultation and is provided at no cost nor obligation. Schedule yours today.
Dr. Darren Miller will work personally with each client to provide individualized assessments that lead to an individualized plan of action.
One of the key differences at CogniBuilders is that we utilize assessments that focus specifically on executive function versus an overall general assessment of cognitive abilities. CogniBuilders uses a comprehensive assessment of executive functions beyond rating scales.
The three stages of the comprehensive evaluation are:
After these stages, the data is analyzed by Dr. Miller, who will present you with a comprehensive report and answer questions you may have. Based upon the report, an Individualized Training & Development Plan will be created to address the appropriate deficits identified by the report.
Following the consultation and comprehensive evaluation, Dr. Miller will create an individualized plan for each client. The plan may include elements such as:
Plans will vary based upon need. They will include only as many office visits/appointments as necessary. The focus will be on providing you the tools you (or your child) need as well as guiding your training & development. Over time the plan, which is largely executed on your own, will become part of your normal daily routine.
When one member of a family or one half of a couple struggles with executive function, others are impacted. This can strain relationships between significant other and/or relationships among family members. Dr. Miller provides Relationship Consulting to give you the tools you need to improve these relationships and cope better, as a couple or family, going forward.
CogniBuilders can assess the cognitive functioning of your child, independent of the school district’s assessment, so you have a better understanding of their strengths and weaknesses. Simply having a diagnosis of ADD/ADHD does little as it is very broad. Our assessment provides specificity of the executive skills that are strengths and weakness so you’re able to more efficiently improve your life. Contact us if you would like an independent assessment to improve the plans for your child’s educational experience.
Having a family member with executive function disorder can be extremely taxing on family dynamics. We’ve designed classes that help in developing skills that allow you to parent in a way that’s more positive and less frustrating for both you and your child. You can read more about the parenting classes by clicking here.
CogniBuilders offers seminars that explain and provide tools to address weaknesses in Executive Function. As part of your corporation’s health and wellness program, consider providing your employees with information that will help them organize, initiate and move work forward, manage timelines, etc. The better your employees’ cognitive—and specifically executive function—skills, the more successful they will be, leading to your company’s overall greater success.
